Presentation: tanea lunsford lynx in Conversation with Albert Broussard (via zoom)

Registration link here

lunsford lynx discusses the early African American presence in San Francisco with Albert Broussard, centering on a 1978 oral history interview between Broussard and Arelious Alberga, an African American gentleman born in San Francisco in 1884.

lunsford lynx, one of the four inaugural artists-in-residence at SFPL through the San Francisco Arts Commission's Artist-in-Residence program, spent ten weeks immersing herself in the Main Library. She became fascinated by the San Francisco History Center’s collection of oral histories. Her journey led her to stumble upon a remarkable series, the Afro-Americans in San Francisco Prior to World War II: Oral History Project and a 1978 conversation featuring an interview between Broussard and Alberga. As lynx delved into the transcripts and listened to Alberga's captivating stories, a vivid picture of African American people in San Francisco during the 1880s and early 1900s emerged.

This program is a companion to the exhibit, we were here, an interactive creative investigation, which delves into the African American presence in San Francisco during the late 1800s and early 1900s, with a particular focus on the 1906 earthquake. It is on view on the 3rd Floor of the Main Library and in the African American Center, Dec. 14, 2023 to March 1, 2024.

we were here is a creative investigation of the Black American presence in San Francisco in the late 1800s and early 1900s, particularly at the occurrence of the 1906 Earthquake. This exhibition grounds into an archival experience and recollection of a larger-than-life story told by Aurelious Alberga (1884-1988) about his experience and survival of San Francisco’s 1906 Earthquake and fires.

Queer Women of Color Film Festival: 'Capitol & Broad' Premier!

In 2019 I was invited to create a poem for SFMoMA’s Open Space project. I wrote ‘Capitol & Broad’ a poem that was published online and is rendered physically in the SFMoMA parking garage!

Shortly after the rendering, I was admitted to QWOCMAP’s institute wherein I created a short film from beginning to end within a long weekend. The film is set to the audio of ‘Capitol & Broad’ and will be premiering at QWOCMAP’s International Queer Women of Color Film Festival online.

Capitol & Broad will be showing the closing night of the festival, June 14th. There will be beautiful films throughout the weekend to watch, I’m grateful to see mine as a part of the line-up.

To reserve your free ticket, register here.

For more details about Capitol & Broad click here. For more information about the Film Festival visit their site.

Eves at the Beat: Womxn Reading at the Beat Museum

During Women’s History month a constellation of events brought together a group of fabulous womxn+ writers. The meeting of these hearts and minds exploded into something powerful and a new monthly reading series concept was born, Eves at the Beat. That was back in March. Eves at the Beat is now a monthly first Thursday reading series at The Beat Museum with occasional readings in Kerouac Alley featuring womxn and non-binary people. Each first Thursday there’s a new curator and MC invited from the previous month. This gives many people the opportunity to step into these roles and make the culture of the readings more equitable and circular, rather than hierarchal. The series was created by Cassandra Rockwood Rice Ganem and is overseen by Rice Ganem and Nicole Henares.
